Thomas is an accomplished biotechnology leader with a proven track record of founding and scaling clinical-stage biopharmaceutical companies.
Prior to founding Nutide, Thomas was the co-founder, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman of the Board of Biomea Fusion, Inc., where he built the company from the ground up as employee number one. He led the company for 8 years from Lead Identification to Candidate Selection to IND-enabling studies, three funding (up) rounds including a $350M raise, and five clinical trials across 300+ patients. He built Biomea Fusion into an innovative covalent based Drug Discovery and Development company with a first-class team of biotech professionals to execute on at least three key programs. That included icovamenib (BMF-219), a first-in-class menin inhibitor for diabetes and oncology, BMF-500, a covalent FLT3 inhibitor, as well as a potential best in class small molecule, oral, GLP-1 agonist, BMF-650.
Prior to founding Biomea Fusion in 2017, Thomas co-founded Point Sur Investors, a long-only biotech investment fund focused solely on innovative therapies that significantly improve the standard of care where he served as Managing Partner. Before forming Point Sur Investors, Thomas managed Investor Relations at Pharmacyclics Inc., where he helped grow the company from a market cap of $6.74B to over $21B, which included the execution of one of the largest biotech acquisitions to date. Prior to Pharmacyclics, Inc., Thomas spent 6 years as a medicinal chemist at Gilead Sciences Inc. engaging in novel drug design and drug development of HCV polymerase and protease inhibitors. Thomas is the co-inventor of VEKLURY (Remdesivir), a polymerase inhibitor for the treatment of COVID-19 infection. Remdesivir generated revenue in 2021 of $5.6B.
Thomas holds an MBA from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and a master’s degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB). As a research scientist, Thomas has been awarded numerous patents in the US and internationally, as well as published in top academic journals such as the American Chemical Society Journal of Medicinal Chemistry and Angewandte Chemie.
Thanaa Makdsi
Co-Founder and Managing Partner
